Civil Engineering Grad School

Note: This blog entry recaps our past Girl Talk. Make sure to see the complete recording and leave feedback. Thank you!

Last month we had our first Girl Talk of 2023.

Girl Talks is an umbrella term for all activities focused on our online community. Creative, out-of-the-box events that develop a communication output for the community to share advice, experiences, and insights on topics related to the industry, but not limited to emotional intelligence, issues, and socio-economic issues. During our Girl Talks, we create a safe and inclusive space where ideas can be shared respectfully.

We invited four panelists from different universities and graduate programs. They all shared experiences regarding their Civil Engineering Graduate School. They answered questions like:

  • Why did they decide to continue their studies?

  • Why or how did they choose that university?

  • How has their experience been?

  • How do they find financial help?

  • What are they planning to do after graduating?

Watch the recording of the event below!

Takeaways:

  • There are many opportunities inside the industry; feel free to explore and find what you like.

  • Find something that accommodates your wants and needs, whether in academia or the construction workforce.

  • Be clear and communicate what you want. Discuss your needs and requests with your advisors and supervisors. It's easy to get suppressed. Do things in a way that is fulfilling to you. Speak your mind easily.

  • On English not being your native language: Knowing English or another language is a tool, a resource. Don't feel like less for taking a while longer to get accustomed to speaking English. Don't be shy. Ask questions, and make sure you are getting things clear. It's a barrier for English to be your second language, but it's not a barrier you cannot deal with. Many people are in the same position. You are not alone!
