Pronouns: She/her/hers

From: Sydney, Australia

What motivated you to be a person in that field?

After completing my apprenticeship as a heavy vehicle and plant mechanic, spending time on the tools, and working as a trainer and assessor, I was frustrated with the lack of real support for women working in the trades fields. As I was so passionate about what I did from a technical standpoint, it pained me to see other women pushed away from their passions as they do not see any other option.

What have been the main challenges you have encountered throughout your career, And what did you learn from them?

I have encountered sexism, bullying, and rumor spreading. Rumor spreading was not something I thought I would encounter in the working world, but since talking about my experience on social media and other women reaching out to me to tell me their experiences, it is more common than I thought.

The main thing I learned from that was that the people who actually matter either do not believe the rumors or will ask you about them directly rather than believing what some random said.

When has been a time that you felt empowered?

When I realized that I could help women without the backing of a company or brand, and when I realized I had enough technical expertise to find work easily. At the same time, I built a business supporting other people. I felt unstoppable!

Why are you a Girl in Civil?

I am a girl in civil because the field offers so many opportunities to grow and learn!

What advice would you share with others?

Don't change yourself to fit in. You are the way you are meant to be for a reason!
