Nora Stanton Barney
Civil Engineer & Women's Rights Activist
Nora Stanton Blatch Barney was an English-born American civil engineer, architect, mathematician, and women's rights activist. She is remembered not only for her contributions to engineering but also for her determination to challenge the barriers faced by women in the profession.
Inspired by her family’s commitment to progress and equality, Nora pursued a degree in civil engineering at Cornell University, where she demonstrated remarkable talent and dedication. In 1905, she became the first woman to earn a degree in civil engineering from Cornell, overcoming the prejudice and gender-based barriers that limited women’s opportunities in the early twentieth century.
Nora began her professional career working on bridge projects with the American Bridge Company and later contributed to the construction of subway tunnels while employed by the New York City Board of Water Supply. Alongside her career, Nora was a strong advocate for women’s rights, championing equal treatment and opportunities for women in society and the workplace. Professionally, she worked as an assistant engineer for the Radley Steel Construction Company before going on to serve as an engineering inspector and structural steel designer for the Public Works Administration in Rhode Island and Connecticut.
She made history as the first woman to become a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). Through her perseverance and determination, she became a pioneer whose legacy continues to inspire women to pursue careers in engineering and contribute to the advancement of the profession.
In recognition of her contributions to engineering and her work on New York City's early water supply projects, the New York City Department of Environmental Protection named a tunnel-boring machine after Nora in 2017.
