Ruth Gordon Schnapp

Structural Engineer

Ruth Gordon Schnapp was a pioneering structural engineer whose work significantly advanced structural and seismic engineering in the United States. After earning her master's degree in structural engineering from Stanford University in 1950, she entered a profession where women were greatly underrepresented. Through her expertise, determination, and dedication, she established herself as one of California's most respected structural engineers. Throughout her career, Schnapp specialized in the design, evaluation, and rehabilitation of buildings, particularly those located in earthquake-prone areas. Her contributions to structural safety helped ensure the resilience of numerous public facilities, museums, libraries, and other critical infrastructure, enhancing public safety and promoting sound engineering practices.

A major milestone in Schnapp's career occurred in 1959 when she became the first woman licensed as a Structural Engineer in California. This historic achievement broke a significant gender barrier and demonstrated that women could excel in highly technical engineering disciplines. Earlier, she had already made history as the first female member of the Structural Engineers Association of Northern California. Her leadership abilities were further recognized when she became the first woman to serve as president of the Bay Area Engineering Council. In 1984, she founded Pegasus Engineering, a consulting firm focused on structural analysis and seismic evaluation, where she continued to contribute to the advancement of earthquake-resistant design and building safety.

Beyond her technical achievements, Ruth Gordon Schnapp left a lasting legacy as a trailblazer for women in engineering. Her accomplishments challenged long-standing stereotypes and opened opportunities for future generations of female engineers. Through both her professional excellence and leadership, she demonstrated the importance of diversity and inclusion within the engineering profession. Her contributions were recognized with numerous honors, including the prestigious Tau Beta Pi Eminent Engineer Award. Today, Ruth Gordon Schnapp is remembered not only for her impact on structural and earthquake engineering but also for inspiring countless women to pursue careers in engineering and leadership.
