Concepción Mendizábal Mendoza was a pioneering Mexican civil engineer who became the first woman in Mexico to earn a degree in civil engineering. Born in Mexico City in 1893, she pursued engineering during a period when women had very limited access to higher education and professional careers in technical fields. Through determination and academic excellence, she completed her studies at the National School of Engineering and graduated in 1930, becoming the country's first female civil engineer. Her achievement represented a major milestone in Mexican engineering history and challenged long-standing barriers that restricted women's participation in science and engineering professions.
One of Mendizábal's most significant contributions was her role in advancing opportunities for women in engineering. Her successful completion of a rigorous engineering program demonstrated that women could perform at the highest levels in technical and scientific disciplines. Her thesis project, which focused on the design of an elevated reinforced-concrete water tower, showcased her expertise in structural and civil engineering principles.
